Samas is a central topic in Hindi grammar, appearing in both class 9 and 10. It involves the process of combining two or more words to form a concise, meaningful compound word. Understanding Samas is essential for mastering grammar questions and for recognizing patterns in language structure.
Meaning and Definition of Samas
Samas literally means "condensation" or "abbreviation." It refers to the process of joining two words to create a new, shorter word that conveys a combined meaning. The main purpose is to express lengthy ideas in a compact form.
- The literal meaning of Samas is "condensation" or "संक्षिप्तीकरण".
- Samas is the combination of two words to form a single, meaningful word.
- Example: "रसोई घर" (kitchen) is formed by joining "रसोई" (cooking) and "घर" (house).
Importance and Commonality in Curriculum
Samas is a recurring topic from lower classes (as early as 5th or 6th) and continues to be relevant in higher classes. It is a foundational concept in language subjects, especially Hindi and English grammar.
- Topics like Samas, Alankar, Vakya, Vilom, and Paryayvachi are common in both class 9 and 10.
- Mastery of Samas is necessary for both board exams and competitive tests.
Types of Samas
There are primarily four types of Samas, but in Hindi grammar, six types are studied due to the addition of two more derived from the main types. The six types are:
- Avyayibhav Samas
- Tatpurush Samas
- Bahuvrihi Samas
- Dvandva Samas
- Karmadharaya Samas
- Dvigou Samas
The main four are Avyayibhav, Tatpurush, Bahuvrihi, and Dvandva. Karmadharaya and Dvigou are considered extensions of Tatpurush.
Avyayibhav Samas
Avyayibhav Samas is formed when the first word is an indeclinable (Avyay) and the compound as a whole functions as an adverb. The meaning of the compound is determined by the first word.
- The first word is always an Avyay (indeclinable).
- The compound acts as an adverb.
- The meaning is derived from the first word.
- Commonly, the first word is a prefix (Upasarg).
Examples:
- यथाशक्ति (according to strength): यथा (as per) + शक्ति (strength)
- दिनभर (whole day): दिन (day) + भर (full)
- बारंबार (again and again): बार (time) + बार (again)
- यथाक्रम (as per order): यथा (as per) + क्रम (order)
- आजन्म (lifelong): आ (till) + जन्म (birth)
Key Features:
- First word is Avyay.
- The compound acts as an adverb.
- The compound ends in an Avyay form.
Tatpurush Samas
Tatpurush Samas is the most prominent type, where the second word is principal and the first word is secondary. The relationship between the words is established through case markers (Karaks).
- The second word is principal; the meaning depends on it.
- The first word is secondary.
- The compound is formed by removing the case marker (Vibhakti) between the words.
Tatpurush Samas Subtypes (based on Karak):
- Karm Tatpurush: Uses "को" (to/for)
- Example: यशप्राप्त (one who has obtained fame): यश को प्राप्त
- Karan Tatpurush: Uses "से" (by/with)
- Example: हस्तलिखित (written by hand): हस्त से लिखित
- Sampradan Tatpurush: Uses "के लिए" (for)
