Flashcards

What is a thalloid body?

A thalloid body is a simple, undifferentiated plant body that lacks true roots, true stems, or true leaves. This characteristic is typical of simpler plant forms, such as algae.

Explain the environmental and industrial importance of Algae.

Environmentally, algae fix approximately 50% of global carbon dioxide (CO₂) and increase dissolved oxygen in aquatic environments, serving as primary producers. Industrially, they yield hydrocolloids like Algin (from brown algae) and Carrageenan (from red algae) for water-holding, and Agar (from Gelidium and Gracilaria) for culture media and food.
