Exam Pattern and Answering Guidelines
The exam consists of 16 Roman-numbered questions, all of which must be attempted. Questions 1, 2, 3, and 14 should be answered in the candidate’s chosen medium (Telugu or English), while the remaining questions must be answered in Sanskrit Devanagari script. Each bit of a question must be answered together and in order. Spelling mistakes can lead to mark deductions, especially in letter writing and translation.
- Roman I: Choose and write one shloka with its meaning.
- Roman II & III: Write a story or summary from the given options, maintaining the same language throughout.
- Roman IV: Non-detailed questions—answer any four out of six.
- Roman V & VI: Annotations and context questions from poetry and prose, including poet introduction, context, and meaning.
- Roman VII–XVI: Short answer, grammar, translation, and letter writing, with specific instructions for each.
Nīti Shlokas: Key Verses and Meanings
Nīti shlokas emphasize moral values and practical wisdom. Each shloka is self-contained and conveys a complete idea, often called a muktaka.
- No eye like education, no penance like truth, no sorrow like attachment, no happiness like sacrifice.
- Treat others’ wives as mothers, others’ wealth as dust, and all beings as oneself—such a person is a true scholar.
- Youth, wealth, power, and ignorance—any one leads to harm; all four together are disastrous.
- Excess in anything (charity, pride, beauty) leads to downfall; moderation is essential.
- Speak the truth, speak pleasantly, do not speak unpleasant truths, nor pleasant lies—this is eternal dharma.
- Help others even at the cost of life or wealth; the merit from helping others surpasses that of a hundred sacrifices.
- Serving and respecting elders increases longevity, knowledge, fame, and strength.
- Great people have unity in thought, word, and deed.
Prose Lessons: Hanumadopadesha and Raghu’s Valor
The prose lessons focus on epic narratives and moral dilemmas, with emphasis on character, duty, and wisdom.
- Hanumadopadesha: Hanuman advises Ravana to return Sita to Rama, highlighting the consequences of adharma, the power of Rama and Lakshmana, and the futility of pride and attachment. Hanuman uses logic, respect, and strong points without anger or insult.
- Raghu’s Valor: Raghu, son of Dilipa, demonstrates courage and righteousness by retrieving the sacrificial horse from Indra, negotiating for his father’s benefit, and upholding dharma even in adversity. The story illustrates the importance of perseverance, negotiation, and respect for elders.
Non-Detailed and Story Lessons
Stories from Hitopadesha, Betal Panchavimshati, and other sources teach practical wisdom, friendship, and the dangers of ignorance.
- Ajñātasya Vāso Na Deyaḥ: Do not give shelter to unknown persons; even good intentions can lead to harm if the person’s nature is unknown.
- Sūdraka-Vīravara Katha: True greatness lies in self-sacrifice for the greater good, as shown by Vīravara’s willingness to sacrifice his son for the kingdom, and Sūdraka’s compassion in saving his servant’s family.
- Other stories: Emphasize the value of friendship, the consequences of greed, and the importance of discernment in relationships.
Grammar: Shabdas (Nouns) and Dhatus (Verbs)
Grammar questions focus on declensions and conjugations, with emphasis on correct forms and endings.
- Shabdas: Learn the declensions for masculine (pumlinga), feminine (strilinga), and neuter (napumsaka linga) nouns. Key patterns:
- Masculine: Rāma, Śiva, Hari, Ravi
- Feminine: Sītā, Latā, Nadī, Vāṇī
- Dhatus: Conjugate verbs in present (laṭ), imperative (loṭ), past (laṅ), and future (bhaviṣyat) tenses.
- Present: bhavati, bhavataḥ, bhavanti; bhavasi, bhavathaḥ, bhavatha; bhavāmi, bhavāvaḥ, bhavāmaḥ
- Imperative: bhavatu, bhavatām, bhavantu; bhava, bhavatam, bhavata; bhavāni, bhavāva, bhavāma
- Past: abhavat, abhavatām, abhavan; abhavaḥ, abhavatam, abhavata; abhavam, abhavāva, abhavāma
- Future: gamiṣyati, gamiṣyataḥ, gamiṣyanti; gamiṣyasi, gamiṣyathaḥ, gamiṣyatha; gamiṣyāmi, gamiṣyāvaḥ, gamiṣyāmaḥ
Sandhi (Word Combination Rules)
Sandhi questions require splitting or joining words and naming the sandhi type. Six main types are tested:
- Savarna Dīrgha Sandhi: When similar vowels combine to form a long vowel (ā + a = ā).
- Examples: param + arthaḥ = paramārthaḥ, rāma + ālayaḥ = rāmālayaḥ
- Guṇa Sandhi: a/i/u + i/e/u = e/o/ai/au.
- Examples: deva + indraḥ = devendraḥ, mahā + indraḥ = mahendraḥ
- Vṛddhi Sandhi: a + e/ai/o/au = ai/au.
- Examples: eka + ekaḥ = ekaikaḥ, mahā + aiśvaryaṃ = mahaiśvaryaṃ
- Yaṇādeśa Sandhi: i/u/ṛ + any vowel = y/v/r insertion.
- Ayavāyava Sandhi: a + e/o/ai/au = ay/av/āy/āv.
- Pūrvarūpa Sandhi: When a word ending in e/o is followed by a word starting with a, only e/o is retained.
- Example: vane + api = vanepi
For each sandhi, write the split/joined form and the sandhi name for full marks.
Translation and Letter Writing
Translation questions require converting simple Sanskrit sentences into Telugu or English, maintaining correct verb forms and pronouns.
- Examples:
- saha devaṃ namati — He is saluting God.
- te parīkṣāṃ likhanti — They are writing the exam.
- tvaṃ jalaṃ pibasi — You are drinking water.
- ahaṃ grāmaṃ gacchāmi — I am going to the village.
Letter writing includes two main types:
- Leave application due to illness: State the reason (e.g., fever), request leave for specific dates, and assure to cover missed lessons.
- Leave application for sister’s marriage: Mention the occasion, request leave for specific dates, and assure to catch up on missed work.
Use the correct format: date, address to principal, respectful salutation, body, closing with name (do not write roll number).
Short Answer and One-Word Questions
Short answer questions test recall of key facts, names, and concepts from the lessons.
- Examples:
- sītā is the destroyer of Laṅkā (sītā sārvalankā vināśinī)
- Hanuman searched for Sita (āñjaneyaḥ)
- Sugrīva sent Hanuman (sugrīvaḥ)
- Rāma killed Vāli with one arrow (rāmeṇa nihitaḥ vāli)
- Raghu is the son of Dilīpa (sudakṣiṇa sūnuḥ raghuḥ)
- Indra is the king of gods (divaukasaṃ adhipatiḥ indraḥ)
- The greatest dharma is non-violence (ahiṃsā paramo dharmaḥ)
